Museum / Monastery - Arnhem

An obelisk marks the furthest point of the advance of the troops attacking over the embankment towards the bridge. This is a little further up the road from the Elizabeth hospital at the museum, the Airbornes called this the monastery in their reports.

Across the road is a house with a plaque, this commemorates the fact that the house was held against German forces for almost 3 days.

St Elizabeth Hospital - Arnhem

The Elizabeth Gasthuis hospital, this was used by the 1st Airborne as the main aid station for two days untill recaptured by the Germans. The Germans let the medical personnel stay to work on the wounded (both sides).

Sint Walburgis church - Arnhem

The St. Walburgis (foreground) church at the foot of the bridge, in the left tower a German figher crashed after strafing the Airbornes.

Airborne Square - Arnhem

The Airborne Square the the foot of the John Frost bridge. The pillar is a leftover from the old palace of justice which was destroyed in the fighting. Every year wreaths are laid here by veterans and dignitaries.

Last but not least a picture of the Palace of Justice in 1945, you can see the pillars on the right.

A couple of monuments are grouped near the bridge. Here you can see a 25 pounder artillery piece, a bomb mate of concrete, part of the destroyed Eusebius church, a number of paintings of the battle and a map showing the old and new buildings superimposed on each other.

In the building on the left is located a small collection from the Airborne museum.

John Frostbridge - Arnhem

The ultimate objective of operation Market Garden, the Rhine bridge at Arnhem:

The northern ramp of the John Frostbridge in the fog, on the right is now a monument, during the war there was a bunker. It's attack with a flamethrower was famously depicted in the movie A Bridge to far.

Something close to a then and now, the ramp of the bridge right after the fighting around it stopped.

This is monument is at the top of the embankment where the actual bridge starts. It's to the left of a stairway that still contains the scars from battle.

Dropzone X & Z - Wolfheze

Dropzone X (right) and landingzone Z (through trees on the left). Also this picture was the location from where the recce squadron started their ill fated advance on the Rhine bridge.

A few 100 meter up this road their advance ended in a German ambush with 2 jeeps destroyed and several wounded.

Ginkel Heath Dropzone - Ede

Here you can see the Ginkel Heath dropzone near Ede. On september 18th 1944 the 4th Parachute Brigade, under command of Sir John Hackett, landed here in the midst of a raging battle.
Every year a memorial drop is made here to honor the fallen and remember the event.

Just to the left of the middle you can see the top of the monument.

The landings from the movie "A Bridge Too Far" were filmed at the Ginkel Heath, on a Sunday the day of the original landings by 4th Para:

Oosterbeek Laag church - Oosterbeek

Oosterbeek Laag church, to the right is the Ter Horst residence where an aid station was located during the fighting. Behind this church was the main evacuation route. The church was defended by what was called the "Lonsdale force" after its commander, Dick Lonsdale.

In front of the church is a tree with a small plaque dedicated to 5 airbornes that were killed there when a mortar hit the tree.

The Needle - Oosterbeek

Across the road from the Airborne museum is the monument called "the Needle". It was founded in 1946 and the first stone was laid by Maj Gen Urqhuart.

The Airborne museum in Oosterbeek, during operation Market Garden it was the headquaters of Maj Gen Urqhuart.

The Air Dispatch monument near the Airborne cemetery. In the background you see part of what was SD-V the supply dropzone during Market Garden.
